WMCA Applauds Supervisor Gómez-Tom as Milwaukee County Resolution Demanding Release of Salah Sarsour Advances to Full Board Vote
Resolution 26-447 passed the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and will be heard before the full Milwaukee County Board on Thursday, May 28
(FRANKLIN, WI, 5/23/2026) — The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance (WMCA) today applauded the advancement of Resolution 26-447, which passed the Milwaukee County Intergovernmental Relations Committee yesterday and will be heard before the full Board of Supervisors on Thursday, May 28 at noon in Room 200 of the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
The resolution condemns the detention of Salah Sarsour, demands his immediate release, and calls for the protection of his constitutional due process rights.
Yesterday's hearing drew powerful testimony from those closest to this fight. WMCA Executive Director Fauzia Qureshi testified on the constitutional dimensions of Salah's detention, challenging its legality and calling for the protection of due process rights that belong to every person on American soil. Adel Sarsour, son of Salah Sarsour, also testified about what it means to watch his father detained for exercising his right to speak.
"We are moved and grateful," said Qureshi. "Supervisor Gómez-Tom stood up for a man being held without justification. Eleven co-sponsors joined her. This is Milwaukee County saying clearly: enough."
WMCA thanks Supervisor Gómez-Tom for authoring and championing this resolution, and the 11 co-sponsors who stood with the community: Supervisors Gómez-Tom, Bielinski, O'Connor, Martinez, Rolland, Martin, Shea, Roundtree Jr., Johnson Jr., Eckblad, and Vincent.
Salah Sarsour has been detained since March 30, 2026. A lawful permanent resident of 32 years, President of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, father of six, grandfather of ten, with no criminal record in this country, he is being held in retaliation for constitutionally protected advocacy. His legal team has denied every charge and filed a bail motion arguing his detention is unconstitutional.
WMCA urges Milwaukee County residents to demand a YES vote on Resolution 26-447 and attend the Board meeting Thursday, May 28 at noon in Room 200, or watch live via the County Legislative Information Center.
"Brother Salah, your community has not forgotten you. We will not stop until you are home."
